How does Napoleon use his power to control the animals?

During chapter VI in the book Animal Farm, Napoleon, one of the main characters is forced to use his power to have a total control over the animals. This power is used in three main ways: Propaganda, Intimidation and lies with intelligence. In order to convince the animals to follow the structure of the farm, Napoleon uses propaganda by manipulating the laws and changing the way that the farm works and this follows the purpose of covering the failure of the windmill . "Never to have any dealings with human beings, never to engage in trade, never to make use of money" (Orwell,1945, p47) These three laws are broken by Napoleon  because as the windmill is not in a good state, he changes those basic 3 rules to be in contact with a human who will support the building of the windmill and will prevent the revelation of a possible failure of it to the animals. Intimidation is also used to convince deeply the animals that Napoleons ideals are right and to avoid the emergence of oppositions. "but they were promptly silenced by a tremendous growling from the dogs" (Orwell,1945, p47) As we can see, Napoleon uses intimidation through his loyal dogs who silent the protests of the young pigs that were against his ideals. So as a result he gets the attention of all the animals that think he is right. Finally, Lies are used to have the control of the animals with the superior intelligence of Napoleon. He changed  some laws and sends Squealer to convince the animals and say that those laws were already there. "No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets" (Orwell, 1945, p50) Here there is a clear evidence of a false statement introduced in the basic law of the animals that told that no animal shall sleep in a bed but Squealer sent by Napoleon`s orders, lies to Clover and Muriel by telling them that this law was already there without changes and the reason to this is that sheets are an invention of human so they are bad.

Superb Animal Stronghold.

Superb Animal Stronghold

A tremendous and memorable victory was achieved by our heroes guided by Snowball. During the counterattack of humans, the animals fought bravely and they succeeded in taking the enemy away from their farm. This battle took place in the animal farm that now is the new home for the animals of Mr. Jones’ farm. It was called the battle of cowshed and it happened by the late summer according to the information that our messengers, the pigeons, collected.

The battle of cowshed consisted in a confrontation between the animals of the new farm and the awful humans, who tried to cancel the peace of the farm because Mr. Jones wanted back “his” farm. The animals succeeded by the well planning of their leader, Snowball, who organized effectively the attack of the animals basing in a Julio Cesar strategy book but as there were triumphs, there were losses. A sheep was killed but the great horse Boxer could also kill a human and who is now feeling bad, here is an interview with our main hero in this epic battle and another eye witness who is called “The Old Benjamin”:

Joaquin: Boxer, How do you feel about what you have done?

Boxer: I feel terrible, wheeeeeee, I did not meant to kill him, brrrruuufff , I just wanted to defend our home and now the guilty is consuming me.

Joaquin: I understand but you also need to understand that this was necessary for the farm.

Boxer: Brrruuuff, yes, I understand but I will remember that man until the end of my days.

PictureBenjamin, please tell me what you think about this battle.

Benjamin: Bah, despite I don’t mind about the work in this farm I recognize that Snowball’s planning was excellent. It was one of the things that this donkey has most enjoyed in decades!

Joaquin: Great Benjamin, how are you feeling now?

Benjamin: It’s all the same to me if we won or not but I feel like normal, I do not care too much about the deaths during the battle like Boxer does.
And now, here is the opinion of our expert account, Coronel David Peterson, a British veteran pilot who was flying with his plane above the battle and is an expert in battle tactics and techniques.

Joaquin: Coronel Peterson, could you tell us how effective was Snowball’s maneuvers?

Coronel: Well, it has been one of the most effective tactics I have ever seen in my military life. I could see the effectiveness of each wave of well organized animals that Snowball sent.

Joaquin: That is good to hear and what do you think about humans?

Coronel: I recognize their effort but if could describe them in one word is: “pathetic”, they had more sophisticated weapons, even a gun! And they were humiliated by these animals. It was a bad organization from Mr. Jones and a shame for all of the other farmers.

As our witnesses and our expert account say, animals made a superb defense against humans in their own territory.

Animal Farm in 2012

Animal Farm in 2012

Allegory has been used by George Orwell by giving a symbolic meaning to all the characters from Animal Farm and the events in which they have participated related to the events that happened during the Russian revolution.

In the second chapter, the rebellion of the animals is directly related to the revolution that the Bolsheviks, represented by the main pigs, committed against Mr. Jones who personifies the Zar, also the Seven Commandments represented ideals like “All animals are equal” which represented a communist utopian desire. In the third chapter, the co-operation of the animals, especially the horses that represent the hard workers, is appreciated as an allegory because unity was also seen in the people during the Russian revolution after the Zar was overthrown. At the same time, the deceits and injustices about the possession of the milk and apples by the pigs are observed and symbolize the management of power during the Bolsheviks’ government. Finally, in the fourth chapter a major event is symbolized, this is the conflict between the animals and the farmers in the “Battle of the Cowshed” which directly represents the battles during Russia’s civil war between the red army (the animals) and the white army (humans).

In my personal opinion, this story is extremely effective as an allegory because the characters and the events are linked to the Russian revolution in all aspects. This story also makes us think about the common mistakes that happened years ago and it helps us not to commit them again.

For the next exercise the theme I chose of Animal Farm was the fight for power and this theme relates to an important current event that is the Civil War in Syria. What is happening is that the Baath government from Syria is now fighting against the opponents of the regime.

This conflict started some years before; the Baath government has been in power since 1970 and it exerts an authoritarian regime with a monopoly in all the political parties and also it does not allow the Western policy of economy which could help Syria. Hafez al-Assad has been ruling the country since 1970 until his dead in 2000, then in the same year his son was elected as president but the majority of the country does not want this measure. They are against the dictatorship of the Baath government because they enjoy the pleasures of power; they do not control power correctly and also show poor interest in the country. Because of this, the “Syrian National Coalition” was founded to fight for the power of the country. As we can see, power is not used in a fair way as in Animal Farm with the humans. It isn’t the same example but we observe that the abuse suffered by the animals is similar to the one that the Syrian country suffers. Not only the animals, it is also seen in the Russian revolution. The Russians against the Zar regime, the animals against the humans and finally the Syrian country against the Baath government. All of them fight for power, to have it and try to use it in a correct way. In this example, the animals represent the people from Syria because they are all united by a leader who is Ahmad Yarba and similar of what Old Major proposes, the Syrians have been influenced by him and they are making a revolution.

ENGLISH essay

Joaquin Melgarejo 10th

In what ways does Major use rhetoric in his speech and what impact does this have on the animals?

Major uses rhetoric in his speech in a number of ways. His aim is to make the animals conscious of their situation and to convince them to overthrow humans. He uses tricolon, rhetorical questions and contrast to persuade the animals of his utopian vision.

During the speech, Old Major uses tricolon because his purpose is to prove by giving examples, that the real enemy is mankind and to make the animals realize about the gravity of their situation, as well as convincing them with his ideology. “Our lives are miserable, laborious and short”p3. As we can observe in this quotation, Major is saying the truth and the reality of the animals` life in the farm which is hard and this shows the animals many conditions about the way they are living. The use of tricolon is to support the fact that they are not living an ideal animal life.

Old major uses rethorical questions in his speech because he wants the animals to reflect about their actual life conditions and to make them think about how is their true nature. “What is the nature of this life of ours?”p3 As we can see, Major is giving a particular thoughtful question because he wants the animals think about if their actual nature which they are living is correct, if it is the right one, to be human dependent animals. The use of this device is to persuade and mainly, to make the animals reflect.

Contrast is used by Major in his speech to describe and explain the differences between the farm animals and people in order to convince the animals. “Man serves the interests of no creature except himself. And among us animals let there be perfect unity, perfect comradeship in the struggle.” p6. This quotation tells us the main difference between those entities, human does not care about the animals, while animals are united and caring and also share the same concerns. The use of contrast is to define the differences between entities so animals can see and reflect about the real issue.

In conclusion, rhetoric, the art or ability of speaking and writing effectively with persuasion as a support to the arguments, is found in Majors` speech by giving accurate examples of their lives, by making the animals reflect deeply and by telling the differences between them and their enemies.

The economist

Hold on tight

Peru s roaring economy http://www.economist.com/news/americas/21571162-biggest-threats-latin-americas-economic-star-are-overconfidence-and-complacency-hold

The article from the economist was about the actual situation of Gamarra in La Victoria district here in Peru, where there is a lot of money produced along the year , 3 billion at the end of the year in only one shopping center that competes with other shopping centers like the ones in Brazil and all around Latin America. This winnings that are produced in Gamarra affect mamy other companies in Latin america and changes the market because it not only sells in Peru , it exports to other countries like Brazil and the people of brazil s main companies take advantage of Gamarra s products that are not too expensive compared with other products exported by Peru. Well, the market here in Peru is not only mining as the article says, the market of shopping in gamarra although is a place that has a lot of crime, grime and poverty, is a very productive way to increase the economy of the country. The government is going to improve about the situation of gamarra by building a new shopping center that will make that place look better because now is not a good-looking place to buy.

Most of the capital flooding into the country is for direct investment by the companies that sell and buy  products here in Peru. Other things the article say is are about the importance of the education in Peru that can be improved by growing economy that the government can earn. The last thing that the article talk is about the political fragility by Ollanta Humala that is a business man who can improve the situation of the congress and the police that are not in a good situation nowadays.
Concluding, the country should be able to grow 4% or 5% in the next 5 years and this could be achieved by avoiding problems in Peru that include accidents.

SONY PS3 in the last years

I will talk and comment about sony s aims in the last years with his This Ps3 is a console developed by them and during 2011 and 2012 their aim was to sell 15 million of this consoles . What a huge amount! Yes, this seemed to be easy but then came Xbox360 with its kinect, a new device more cheaper and easy to use than the playstation s move that was its competence.

This hole caused by the competition in the ps3 was affronted by the development of sony features in Ps3 like more games and exclusivity characteristics like netflix or other programs inside the console. The response to this in Microsoft was to low their prices but more people still buy PS3 because mainly of the online features and free multiplayer that it had and in the xbox360 you need to pay.

After 2011 passed, during the 2012 the news of the production of the production of the new Wii U, affected sony because there was a new portable videogame. In response of that, sony developed the Playstation Vita that beat the Wii U. Finally for the 2013 , Sony s aims is to release to market his new PS4!  And because of this release ..Xbox will release their 720. The competition will be fierce this year with the new features.

Combis demand:

In this text i will explain how is the graph about combis and their relationship with other facts.

Taxes:  If the government enforces a law to raise taxes for Combi drivers, those taxes  will affect severaly drivers because not only there will be protests and unrest against  the laws of the government, also their costumers will reduce and they may also use other ways of transports because combis price is too high. The demand line of the combis will shift to the right ,this means that the price will go up but the quantity will stay the same, this is not good for combi business because there is a space for them to get to the equilibrium point.

The use of more cars: This fact affects also the demand of combis because with more cars there are two different situations, if these cars are cheaper or some kind of cheaper they will make the demand of the combis shift to the left, producing less consumers for combi business because they will prefer to buy a car that is more expensive but are more safe than combis and in a better situation. Because of this probably Combi business will change and decrease their prices against the purchase of more cars for use. If the cars that are sold are not too cheap , the difference in the demand of combis won t be so big because people will still prefer to use combis because they are cheap.

The Gas price: In this case i have researched that the main fuel of the majority of combis here in Peru is Diesel that is petrol very dangerous for the environment , more than common gas. Well If only the Gas Price is raised, people obviously will prefer to get into combis because normal cars and some taxis work with gas and they won t use them too much because of the Gas price that is increased, they will want more the use of combis. In this case the Combi businees will win , they will take advantage of the increment of normal gas. In a graph, the demand for combis will shift to the right, this means that the new equilibrium point will benefit combi business, they will increase a little their price for combis and more people will still prefer them because the price of gas has increased and combis are still more less. If the Diesel is also increased, well there, the demand of the combis will shift to  the left, making that there will be less consumers and this will affect combi business.
What do you think about the reading ?

Well for me, the reading is telling the truth nowadays because those educational laws that the government said, affect the demand of drugs. If there is less drugs and they have a huge price, it is obvious that the addicts will still buying because they just want them no matter the price but with the education laws, those people can become less addict so there will be less consumers. Drugs are a big market, the people win a lot but is not good for the consumers, they generate health problems and make them addict that causes them to buy drugs and more drugs. Other thing is the drug interdiction opposite of drug education that raises the prices of drugs but as i have said, addicts will still buying them and also there will be more drug-crimes and also stealing because of the raise of the price. I think drug education is the best way to reduce the drug consumers and also the price of them.

Impact of drugs from USA to Peru

The drug market and changes in USA have big impacts in Peru society. That drug that people of USA have, where do yo think they gain it? They have it from Peru! In Peru there are huge producers of drugs that export them to other countries. Mainly we are not a drug affected country but we are huge sellers , we export them at higher prices in Kilos or Tones some times. Those people are rich because of drugs in Peru  and with the drug education and the laws that the USA government says, if they are applied, probably the selling of drugs here in Peru will be reduced because there will be less drug consumers and addicts and also a posibility that drug sellers in Peru can make is to low their prices so it will be easier to people from USA to buy them despite the drug interdiction of USA government. The consequences of drug interdiction and also drug education here in Peru also could be the high reduction of sellers, that will affect some kind of the economy and those people won t have jobs, because of the lack of consumers so they may go to military service that offers a service when you don t do anything. Concluding, the market of drug sellers in Peru will be affected by drug interdiction and education from USA.

Demand curve in Peru

An example here in Peru apart from children is in Public transport.

Combis are a major problem here in Peru and it has a demand curve , there are some options that include shifting the demand curve and moving it . One of them is by eliminating these combis by introducing other way of transport or by changing the price of the Metropolitano and this will cause more and more people to prefer the Metropolitano than combis, that is a lot safe. This achieves to shift the demand curve to the left so the combis will be less. This option allows you to shift the demand curve and so, eliminating combis and replace them with other transports.
Other way to change the demand curve is by moving along it, if the government rises the taxes and the prices of the combis, there will be less people that will prefer this way of transport. Remember that nowadays it is very cheap! and poor people like this and by moving it for more price, it will be unfair for them but at the same time good because combis produce many problems in people and the environment. In this option, the combis stays but their prices rises and this will affect people.
Nowadays there is this problem and i think the best choice is the second one.

Law of unintended consequences

One day, years ago I wanted to wash cars for money and was a very good idea, i received 15 soles for each wash. First i started with my car and then people of my street saw me and wanted their cars to be washed. What i wanted was only to clean my car and get 15 soles each week. But consequences got mad, there was a car wash business down the street and they washed for 17 soles and they got less and less clients that made them broke. I didn t wanted to make them broke i just wanted to clean my car but opportunity to make more money came and i did not reject it. It was a consequence i unintended.

Combis problems

A national problem:

This transportation method is a severe problem here in Peru, it includes the "Combis" these vehicles produce very bad gases that contaminate the environment, this is only one of many of the problems the combis produce. At the year, the majority of accidents are in public transport in Peru, this is because of the actual state of the combis, they are imported from China or Asian countries but in not a good state , they are very used and unstable. The risk of having an accident in a combi is very high. They also interrupt the traffic jam , they are main cause why there is so much traffic in Lima.

A way to solve this general problem with the combis is not so easy, is very difficult. A law to make is not a good way to solve this, because people, especially combi drivers won t follow the rules and eradicate them very fast is worst, there will be protests. So to change this problem a possible solution is to make or build another way of transport that will compete against combis and people will prefer the new transports, other method is to improve the transports we already have to be more safetly so people will prefer them. Another way is to tell or convince the combi drivers to sell their combis or use another vehicle , a better vehicle than combis.
